I'm currently reading 1 Samuel. I'm not used to reading good stuff about King Saul. I've always had this picture in my mind of a psycho king who got so jealous of David and tried to kill him. Turns out, he started off a pretty decent guy from humble beginnings. He came from the tribe of Benjamin which was the smallest tribe, and from a clan least of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin (9:21).
Anyways, today, I read chapter 11. This Ammonite dude named Nahash took over some place called Jabesh Gilead. The men of Jabesh Gilead were unwilling to fight because they felt hopeless in their situation. They wanted to make a deal with Nahash saying, "If you spare us, we'll surrender and serve you." Nahash, being the smug person that he is, said he'll only spare them if he gouges everyone's right eye. Gouging their right eyes would've been humiliating for them, and it would be a disadvantage if they did try to fight. The men of Jabesh Gilead were like, "Crap. Fine, we'll go send some messengers to see if there's anyone who can save us." The messengers ended up in Gibeah where Saul was. In the end, God used Saul and his armies to save the people of Jabesh Gilead. Brownie points for King Saul!
The thing that I found interesting in this passage was Nahash. I read a comparison of him and Satan.
"1) Satan attacks us, but cannot do anything against us without our agreement. He asks for, and requires our surrender.
2) Satan wants us to serve him, and will attempt to intimidate us into giving in to him.
3) Satan wants to humiliate us, and exalt himself over us. Through humiliating one saint, Satan wants to bring reproach on all God’s people.
4) Satan wants to take away our ability to effectively fight against him.
5) Satan wants to blind us, and if he cannot blind us completely, he will blind us partially.
v6) The name Nahash means serpent or snake!"
"Satan attacks us, but cannot do anything against us without our agreement. He asks for, and requires our surrender."
Hm deep. Do you believe this to be true?
